Mothertongue

A fragrance house that names its scents after the things people say when they are lying.

Role
Self-initiated concept. Naming, positioning, packaging system, campaign art direction and all copy by AG&CO.
Scope
Naming system, three SKUs, packaging and unit cartons, sample cards, campaign key art, launch copy, four-page mini editorial
Status
Speculative — developed in-house as a writing and packaging showcase

The assignment

Fragrance is the most crowded category in beauty and the most interchangeable. Every launch promises the same four things: escape, confidence, memory, and a version of you that is slightly better rested.

Mothertongue was built to test whether a fragrance brand can be carried entirely by language — no florals, no silk, no aspirational fiction. Just a naming system sharp enough that the product becomes secondary to the idea.

The thinking

Every scent is named after a phrase people use to avoid telling the truth. I’m Fine. Almost There. New Number. On My Way. No Worries. The line is the product. The joke is that everyone recognises themselves in it.

The packaging refuses to help. Clinical white cartons, pharmaceutical bottles, tiny functional type, a wide grotesque wordmark that behaves like a label rather than a logo. Nothing is decorated, so the words have nowhere to hide.

Campaign photography is close, cold-flashed and slightly uncomfortable — a mouth mid-sentence, a hand on a doorframe. The imagery is about the moment just before someone lies, not about the fragrance.

A fragrance brand does not sell a smell. It sells a sentence you want to be true about yourself.

Brand system

Naming

  • Rule — Every SKU is something said out loud, never a noun
  • Test — If it could be a candle name, it is cut
  • Never — Elixir, essence, journey, ritual, muse

Voice

  • Register — Dry, exact, funny in the second read
  • Notes — Written as things, not adjectives: hot pavement, a phone in your hand
  • Packaging copy — Set like fine print, meant to be read closely

Launch copy

ALMOST THERE — vetiver, hot pavement, and the smell of a phone in your hand.

I’M FINE — cold iron, clean laundry, and something burning three streets away.

NEW NUMBER — wet concrete, cheap champagne, the first ten minutes of a party.

The work

The outcome

Mothertongue is the volume that proves the writing. Naming, launch copy and packaging language are the hardest deliverables to demonstrate and the easiest for a studio to fake with a mood board, so this one is built out of decisions rather than references.

It also demonstrates the discipline the category rewards: a beauty brand can be cold, funny and unglamorous and still be the one people repeat to their friends.
